Let’s define these first. Head terms are usually one to three words long making the shorter and more generic. Longtail keywords, however, contain three or more words. It is important that your website has a mix of both head terms and long tail terms because it will give you a keyword strategy of short-term wins and long-term goal.

It is obvious that the latter would be harder to rank for. Head terms generally bring in more traffic but long-tail terms will usually get you more desirable traffic. However, a searcher that types in the head term usually is an inexperienced searcher and you cannot tell exactly what they want, or it’s something completely unrelated to your business. Head terms, however, are quick wins that you should still use.

5. Scope the competition:

You do not have to do exactly what your competitor is doing but looking through their keywords may spark ideas on how you can distinguish yourself from them. If your competitor has similar keywords to your business, find their ranking.

If you see that their ranking is much higher than yours, you could consider ranking similar keywords higher. Check out the keywords that your competitor ranks low. These may be a great opportunity for you to own market share on important but underutilized terms.

6. Use Google planner or the Free Jaaxy:

Now that you have filled your topic buckets, it is time to sort your keywords and figure out which most relate to your business. There are several Free Keywords Research tools you can use to do this such as  Jaaxy, Google Adwords Keyword Planner, Google Trends, and Keyword Planner.
